John Denver on his craft:

Over the years I’ve always enjoyed taking photos as a way of relaxing. For me it offers a wonderful opportunity to stop and focus on this moment right here and forget all the other things. I’m less secure [showing my photos than giving a live concert], because my photography is about the way I look at things.

The things I like the most in photography are color, light and composition. I travel a lot. If there is an interesting scene that catches my eye, I photograph it to show life the way it really is – especially if there is something funny in it. I like pictures that let me enjoy myself as a human being.

I’ve been in situations where I’ve so much felt the intrusions of the camera that it’s difficult for me to take pictures of people. It has to be a situation where the person is totally comfortable or far away. I’ve never looked at the sad things, I don’t think I’ve taken anything that you’d see and say, ‘Oh, Lord.’

I have two 35mm cameras and eight lenses, and I have a Hasselblad I use once in a while. I get a lot of flack about it. My camera bag is the heaviest thing on the tour.
