Saudade brings together new works by Denver-based artist Peter Strange Yumi and JDP Anderson, mapping a visual dialogue rooted in distance, memory, and movement between the United States and Brazil.
Centering on JDP and Yumi’s experiences traversing the coastal trails, urban centers, and landscapes of São Paulo and beyond, the exhibition explores the untranslatable Portuguese concept of saudade—a deep emotional state of melancholic longing for an absent something or someone that one loves, and the lingering ache of places left behind.
Through a striking collection of photographs, abstract paintings, mixed-media collages, and print works, the artists investigate how personal geography shapes identity, how memory settles into physical materials, and the enduring pull of distant horizons.
About Peter Strange Yumi:
Peter Strange Yumi is a contemporary mixed-media artist and media technologist whose work investigates the intersection of physical tactile processes and digital documentation. Based between São Paulo, Brazil, and Colorado, United States, his practice spans abstract painting, linocut printmaking, and mixed-media collage.
With a background in media production and digital analysis, Yumi’s visual language explores spatial depth, structural tension, and organic textures. His creative methodology bridges traditional studio craftsmanship—such as manual print techniques—with modern digital workflows. Yumi’s work has been exhibited in cultural institutions and galleries internationally. His upcoming joint exhibition, Saudade, debuts at the Leon Gallery in Denver, marking a new exploration of memory, distance, and physical presence.
About JDP Anderson:
Every so often, a space oddity comes along and smashes into the art world. Producing work that doesn’t fit neatly into an artist statement. Or into anything that resembles a description, really. Work that’s not meant to be hung on gallery walls. But rather, work that’s meant to be an experience. Communicating a particular human experience. A body of work that’s like a tattoo of an artist’s life written across this planet. Written with the fire and rocks and mud of this planet. Work that’s aware that to create, we must destroy, and sometimes, what we must destroy are pieces of ourselves.
There’s no straight line between Jared’s life and the work on this site. Because his work is about life, and life does not have a narrative structure. That’s something we add to it. He was born in Denver and studied art at the University of Colorado, Boulder. Then, Jared hit the road, immersing himself in a variety of experiential residencies and academic settings. He went to the outback to learn aboriginal painting techniques. In Bejing, he explored the techniques of Chinese masters. Spain, Cuba, France, Prague, and the UK Jared honed his work into an interdisciplinary practice that draws on everything from primitive painting to abstract impressionism, contemporary street photography, and minimal Japanese handbuilt aesthetics.
