Prairie Empire + Mike Clark at Leon

Prairie Empire + Mike Clark

Doors at 8pm

In honor of their brand new album, The Salt,  released on Commodore Trotter Records on July 1, Prairie Empire will be gracing Leon on Friday, July 15th with a magical show

About Prairie Empire:

Prairie Empire is a Brooklyn-based band fronted by Brittain Ashford with Nim Ben-Reuven on drums. The band will be touring this summer with the support of Jacki Paolella on bass, keyboard and vocals.
The first Prairie Empire album was released on Trailer Fire Records and recorded (unknowingly) in a Portland living room with the band Harlowe. Prior to that Brittain recorded a handful of things in her bedroom under her own name, most notably There, But For You, Go I, which was released on Paris-based Waterhouse Records.
When not writing for Prairie Empire Brittain performs with Dave Malloy's Ghost Quartet; she will head to Broadway in the fall with Malloy's Natasha, Pierre and the Great Comet of 1812. Nim Ben-Reuven is a freelance art director & graphic artist and is a hand-lettering badass.

"Immersive, gorgeous … stunning."
- Martin Guitar, Factory Favorites

"The sheer emotive power of her voice, whether it be a whisper or a fiery, crackling, pull-on-your-heart-strings sort-of-yodel, captures a pain that everyone has experienced but only few can recreate. During "Snow," Ashford's voice dances on the verge of tears... and then out of left field a trumpet sounds... I'm not sure what else this band could possibly throw in to make its live show more entertaining, and looking around the Beat it seems as if everyone else is also on the edge of their seats."
- Las Vegas Weekly

"This s/t Prairie Empire record is fucking gorgeous."
- Folkhive

About Mike Clark:

A prolific songwriter and performer whose past projects run the gamut from country-punk (The Jack Trades) to bluegrass (Crow Flies) to gypsy folk (The Ghost of Michael Clark). Clark’s alter ego as one-fifth of the popular Pueblo Americana outfit The Haunted Windchimes has seen him sharing stages with everyone from Ramblin’ Jack Elliott to Garrison Keillor, playing before a listening audience of 4 million on A Prairie Home Companion last year.

First gaining notoriety from a series of frenetic dance‐party live performances in 2011‐2012, Mike Clark & the Sugar Sounds deliver a style steeped in rock & roll and suffused with garage soul, showcasing a super-group’s worth of Colorado blues, folk and rock artists in their prime: Inaiah Lujan (guitar/The Haunted Windchimes), Marc Benning (bass/34 Satellite), Alex Koshak (percussion/The Grant Sabin Band), Grant Sabin (trumpet/The Grant Sabin Band), and Ian Bourgal (sax/The Changing Colors).

While it references the greats of soul and rock & roll, from Otis Redding to Roy Orbison and Creedence Clearwater Revival, Round and Round is something original, fresh and new. Round and Round’s 8 tracks, produced and recorded by Marc Benning and Mike Clark, will take you on a epic journey; riding on a wave of emotion through troubled waters and smooth sailin’ through the good times. Round and round you’ll go, moving and grooving, singing and dancing. Come along and take a chance on The Sugar Sounds!
